Field Irrigation Engineering: FAO-56 Water Balance, Pivot Geometry, and Walk Kinematics
Large-scale irrigation with mechanized walking spans couples agrometeorology with heavy machine control. Discover the real-time computational pipeline for application depth, pipeline hydraulics, and Master tower travel speed implemented directly on the ESP32-S3 microcontroller.
Center pivot systems irrigate crop fields ranging from dozens to well over one hundred hectares. Unlike residential garden zones, starting a deep-well pump discharging over 100 m³/h and moving a multi-span steel structure weighing tens of tons demands rigorous water balance accounting and deterministic speed regulation[cite: 1]. Deploying an Edge AI controller eliminates manual chart lookup and electromechanical percentage timer adjustments.
Cumulative Application Depth Principle:
Center pivots do not operate in frequent, short daily bursts. Due to the high electrical demand of pump startup and the risk of soil compaction from heavy machinery, cycles are designed to deliver a full technical application depth (e.g., 10–25 mm) in a continuous pass lasting between 12 and 48 hours.
1. Agrometeorological Balance: Evapotranspiration and Effective Rainfall
Crop water demand is determined following standard FAO-56 methodology[cite: 1]. Actual crop evapotranspiration \( ET_c \) scales reference evapotranspiration \( ET_0 \) by the crop phenological coefficient \( K_c \).
In open fields, not all rain reaches the effective root zone[cite: 1]. Light showers evaporate from the canopy before penetrating the soil, while heavy downpours generate surface runoff[cite: 1]. Effective precipitation \( P_{\text{eff}} \) is computed via the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) hydrological model.
The net soil moisture deficit to be replenished over a rotation cycle window (e.g., 3 days) is.
2. Circular Field Geometry and Volumetric Water Requirement
The pivot rotates around a fixed central pivot point, sweeping a complete circle (\( 360^\circ \)) or a configured angle \( \alpha \) (e.g., \( 270^\circ \) when avoiding farm buildings)[cite: 1]. Given the target field area \( A \) [ha] and sweep angle, the system determines the effective machine radius \( R \) [m].
The gross water volume \( V \) [m³] required to apply target depth \( D_{\text{mm}} \) over field area \( A_{\text{ha}} \) is.
Given the steady discharge rate of the pump station \( Q_{\text{sys}} \) [m³/h], total required cycle run time \( t_{\text{run}} \) [hours] equals.
3. Master Tower Kinematics and Speed Setpoint
In a center pivot, the outermost drive unit (Master Tower) sets the pace for the entire machine[cite: 1]. It travels along the outer perimeter arc length \( L_{\text{arc}} \) [m].
To dispense the exact calculated irrigation depth, the Master tower must advance at the target ground speed \( v_{\text{req}} \) [m/h].
RelativeTo the machine's maximum rated continuous speed \( v_{\text{max}} \) [m/h], the required percentage speed setting (Duty Cycle or VFD target) is.
Physics of Pulse Walking (Alignment):
In conventional electro-mechanical panels, \(\text{Speed}_{\%}\) governs a 60-second cycle percentage timer. When set to 25%, the Master tower runs for 15 seconds and pauses for 45 seconds. Pausing the end tower allows intermediate towers to walk and catch up via physical mechanical alignment switches. This eliminates structural torsional stress and prevents span rollover or buckling.
| Crop Profile | Crop Factor \( K_c \) | Peak Demand Window | Agronomic Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corn / Maize (AGRI_CROP_CORN) | 1.15 | Tasseling, silking, and grain fill | Deep root architecture (up to 1.2 m); highly responsive to deficit management. |
| Winter/Spring Wheat (AGRI_CROP_WHEAT) | 1.05 | Stem elongation and heading | Moderate retention; cut off irrigation prior to harvest to prevent crop lodging. |
| Potatoes (AGRI_CROP_POTATO) | 1.10 | Tuber initiation and flowering | Shallow root zone; sensitive to moisture swings which cause common scab. |
4. Relay Assignment and Reversing Safety Interlock
On the Waveshare ESP32-S3 6CH Relay board, the field profile interfaces with the pivot control cabinet contactors via dedicated channels.
- K1 (Main Well Pump / Mainline Pressure): Energized continuously for the entire duration \( t_{\text{sec}} \).
- K2 (Forward Direction Contactor – CW): Maintained high alongside pump K1 to enable forward movement.
- K3 (Reverse Direction Contactor – CCW): Forced strictly to zero (\( \text{timer} = 0 \)), enforcing a software lock against phase short-circuit.
- K4 (Fertigation Injection Pump): Triggered in the middle 60% window of cycle duration, guaranteeing pre-irrigation soil prep and clean water flushing post injection[.
Deployment Architecture: Pivot Control on Waveshare 6CH
Implemented within agri_field_irrigation.c, the calculation pipeline delivers deterministic machinery control on the ESP32-S3 microcontroller.
- True Edge Autonomy (No-Cloud): Real-time effective rainfall evaluation, cycle hours, and speed duty cycles compute in SRAM without cloud connectivity.
- Contactor Short-Circuit Prevention: Strict mutual interlocks prevent simultaneous activation of Forward (K2) and Reverse (K3).
- Hardware Fail-Safe Watchdogs: Output channels decrement in a hardware 1 Hz interrupt, automatically cutting power to pumps and drives if communication stalls.
